When I came across this trunk full of old drive in movie speakers it made me remember back to my youth.  In High School our favorite activity during the summer months was gong to the drive in movies (not that anyone watched them, it was more of a hang out place).  My first car was a 1965 Ford Gallexy.  Being a Senior in High School in 1983 and having a Ford Gallexy was not a cool thing, but I soon became real popular when everyone learned I could fit 12 people in the trunk to get them in the drive in movies for free lol    The things we used to do!  All of the drive ins closed in our area about the time the boys were born…what a shame…they will never know what fun these drive ins were!

Oh the memories this brought back . . . there is a outdoor movie theatre in Door County that John and I intend to visit next summer . . . but we will probably stay in the front seat.

oh wow, recently a friend and I were reminiscing about the times we’d squeeze into a trunk to get in the drive-in theatre in North Kamloops, B.C. western Canada~what a sweet photo and needless to say full of a few summers of drive-in sneak-in’s for us and we are A-WAAAAY older than you~we’d learn years later that the owners knew just what we were up to and were more concerned that all of us exited the trunk than in the price of the entry….imagine!

Good to see that somethings in life are universal. Same speakers same memories and no one in the first five rows. LoL Thanks for the memories Ms. Bob Hope.

    Hi Tammy,
What memories! We did the same thing when my hubby and I were dating. Have a great day!

There were no drive-ins on Staten Island–but there were a few remnants when we moved to Connecticut in 1978. We saw one of the Star trek movies at the one in Southington. The one in our town was notorious–Triple X rated. AM radio sometimes picked up the panting. Apparently all the adolescent males in town knew where one might park to get a shot at the screen and which frequencies on which to catch the audio.

Ahhh. So that was you taking all the speakers from the drive in! I always wondered what they were being used for.

  8. Great memories there!
We ‘LOST’ our last one about 15 years ago and it was a sad moment…lost in time with the new generation never realizing the fun we had at them……sometimes even including the movie!!!!!!

  9. Steve Says:

Never had the pleasure of the drive in…they don’t have them in the UK…well not where I grew up anyway…great capture tho…love the patterns

  10. steven Says:

Cool image and are these all yours that you took? 😉

My first car (actually it was a car shared by us three boys) was a 65 Ford Galaxy too! It was a lot of power for a teenager. I recall easily getting it up over 100 mph on country roads. The stupid stuff we did! I’ll try and find a photo of mine sometime and post it on my blog. Ours was a dark blue.

    • Tammy Says:

Unfortunately not…they were in a Thrift Store in the Old Market…my husband is dying to go there to purchase some lol

My Galaxy was a pale yellow and we referred to it as the tank! It barely fit through the Taco Bell drive thru lol But power it did have…you couldn’t help to speed in it (too bad the police didn’t understand that lol)

  11. This is such a wonderful photo. It brings back such memories. Where in the world did you find these speakers?

  12. hmca14 Says:

You never know what you are going to find at these old thrift stores! I remember them well….but from the 60’s!

  13. Iris (Rose) Says:

great memories there – we had drive-ins too

  14. lisa Says:

Tammy, you are too funny, and what a wonderful memory!

  15. Lisa Says:

Sad that the drive-ins have all closed now. I’m not familiar with the 65 Ford Galaxy, but my first car was one it was hard not to speed in too 😉
I look forward to either you or steven, or both of you, posting a picture of your cars 🙂

  16. Ellen Says:

Great image and cool that you and Steven had the same boat of a car. There is still a working drive-in here, come on out and I’ll sneak you in in the back of my pick-up.
