While at the eagle center we were lucky enough to see an eagle eat.  Meet Harriet.  Harriet too has an injured wing, and also if you notice her punk hair do, she also may have had some scar tissue on her head that caused her feathers to grow this way.   Harriet’s favorite meal is rats, but her second most favorite meal is a rabbit.  We learned that an Eagles beak is not that strong, they hunt primarily with their feet and claws by ripping their prey apart.  When they eat they swallow the bones and all.  Doesn’t sound very appetizing to me!  Harriet had this rabbit down in minutes and afterwards looked very full!

Also, just to prove Christina and I were really together here is a quick picture.  Both Christina and I are alike in that we both don’t like our pics takes.  lol

The injured eagles are in a room with a huge window that overlooks the Mississippi River.  Whenever they see another eagle flying in their territory (which happened several times while we were there) they made a loud screeching sound to claim their territory.  Once one eagle started screeching they all did….and boy was it LOUD!

Meet Donald.  At first I thought he was an immature Bald Eagle, but later I saw the sign that identified him as a Golden Eagle.  I had never seen a Golden Eagle up close so I was thrilled.  The Golden Eagle lives in the Northern Hemisphere and prefers fields and land for his hunting (Bald Eagles are usually found around water).  Donald was also hit by a car and his right wing was injured in two different spots and therefore he can not fly as well.  Donald loves being sprayed w/ water, that is why you see all the water drops on his feathers.

We were amazed how big the eagles were close up and found out this bird can weigh anywhere from 8-12 lbs.   This beauty came in right at 10lbs…

I admit it…I am fudging this theme just a bit.  All of the eagles in the National Eagle Center were accidentally injured.  Even after medical attention none of the 5 eagles in the center could survive in the wild.  This particular eagle had part of his wing amputated and can not fly due to being hit by a car on the highway.  To find out more about the injured eagles click here:  The Eagles.   Be sure to click on each of the individual eagle’s pictures for their story.

If you look closely you can see the injured back wing.
